- Thyroid cancer is a cancer that forms in the thyroid gland (an organ at the base of the throat that makes hormones that help control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight). - The thyroid gland produces several important hormones, including the thyroid hormone, which is involved in controlling body temperature, weight, energy level and heart rate. The thyroid gland also produces calcitonin, which helps the body use calcium. Cancer in this organ can cause neck pain resulting from a lump or swelling of the neck; this may also result in trouble swallowing. It may also cause hoarseness other voice changes; trouble breathing (feeling as thought you’re breathing through a straw; a cough that isn’t related to a cold.
